wscContinued complaints about the speed of drivers travelling through Bundanoon and Exeter have this week resulted in the location of five speed observation trailers in the area and an increased Police presence over coming months.

Residents who have written to Council, express concern for the safety of cyclists and pedestrians of all ages but particularly the young and elderly. Looking at the speed data for the area we can see why, with the classic example being the 50k area of Penrose Road where around 1500 vehicles travel through each day and 88% were travelling above the speed limit!

Council is using the Jordans Crossing Gazette plus press and newsletter articles to spread the message that exceeding the speed limit in village areas is just not on.

Speed observation trailers have been located in Middle Road, Exeter Road, Werai Road and Penrose Road until 24 June.

You won't be booked by the courtesy speed check display - they are there as a friendly reminder to watch your speed. Sometimes drivers don't realise just how fast they're going, particularly on roads they travel daily.

Police will however commence a specially targeted enforcement effort during and after the speed trailers are removed. So be careful, and slow down!

Should you wish to discuss any aspect of this initiative, or make any comment, please contact Charmaine Cooper, Road Safety Officer, on 4868 0809 or email wscmail.

Minister for Roads Michael Daley has announced a new demerit point scheme will be introduced on 1 July 2009 with the following demerit point system applying for unrestricted licence holders:

  • 1 to 10kmh over the speed limit will attract one demerit point and an $84 fine;
  • 11 to 20kmh over the speed limit will attract three demerit points and a $197 fine;
  • 21 to 30kmh over the speed limit will attract four demerit points and a $338 fine;
  • 31 to 45kmh will result in a three month suspension, five demerit points and a $647 fine;
  • Over 45kmh will result in a six month suspension, six demerit points and a $1,744 fine.

The penalties for P2 drivers will increase with those caught speeding from 1 to 30km over the limit losing an additional demerit point. This means that P2 drivers will lose their licence on their second speeding offence and P1 drivers will continue to lose their licence for just one offence.
